Nail Fungus, also called onychomycosis is caught from moist warm areas. It is a chronic disease caused due to abnormal pH of the skin, compromised immune system, sweat builds up in synthetic socks and poor foot hygiene. It gets through cracks in the nails or tears in the skin and can become painful too.
Nail fungus causes the nail to become thickened, brittle/crumbly/ragged, change shape with white or yellow spots on the tip of the nail, become dark in color or become dull. Sometimes the nails separate from the nail bed- it is called onycholysis. Without proper treatment, this can go on forever. Being a common ailment, nail fungus can be treated with natural remedies at home without any medical consultations.
Tea Tree Oil
Tea tree oil is a natural disinfectant. It has both antibacterial and anti-fungal properties. It can be applied directly or as a soak.
Direct application: Tea tree oil should be diluted using any base oil such as almond or olive oil. Wash, clean and dry the nails before application. Trim the dry nails using a nail clipper and file the infected nails using a coarse nail filer. Dip a cotton ball in the oil and apply it over the affected area. Leave it until completely absorbed and then wash off and dry using paper towels.
Soak: Wash, clean, dry and file the nails. Make a soak using 4-5 drops of tea tree oil in warm water. Soak in for half an hour and gently scrubbing the nails with the help of a toothbrush at intervals.
Baking Soda and Vinegar
Baking soda is not anti-fungal, but fungistatic. It doesn’t kill the fungus but prevents the fungus from spreading. Vinegar is alkaline in nature and as the fungus grows well in acidic medium, it kills them.
For this two tubs are needed. In one tub, add a cup of vinegar to the water and soak your feet for 15 minutes and pat dry. Then, add 4-5 tablespoon of baking soda to the water in another tub. Soak the feet in it for 15-20 minutes and pat dry.
Coconut Oil has antifungal properties. The fatty acids in it disturb the fungal membrane and kill them. Before applying, clean and trim the nails. Then smear the affected areas with it and leave to dry.
Oil of Oregano
Oregano oil is antiseptic, antibacterial, antiparasitic, antiviral, analgesic and antifungal. Miz two drops of oregano oil with olive oil base and applly using a cotton ball on clean and dried infected nails.
